June Diane Raphael Is Writing The Badass Woman's Guide to Running For Office

Comedic actress June Diane Raphael (Grace and Frankie, many other funny things you like) has teamed up with political activist and EMILY’s List writer Kate Black to write Represent: The Badass Woman’s Guide to Running for Office and Changing the World. While the book will have some comedic elements, it will mainly serve as a concrete, accessible guide for women in politics, taking them “from ‘maybe I can do this’ to ‘yes, I can.’”

It’s no secret that in order to survive the Trump years, women need to take larger roles in office. Unfortunately, research shows that women often have to be asked to become more involved, for reasons ranging from subtly enforced traditional views of domesticity to the straight-up patriarchy. Represent aims to be “that very first ask.”

According to a press release, the book aims to lay out the basics of running for office, clearly and comprehensively by “combining elements of a workbook/planner with prescriptive how-to text.” You don’t need to shoot for the presidency either, as the book includes campaigning advice on local, state or federal levels. If you’re not interested in a role in the spotlight, but want to become more politically involved, Represent has you covered with information on how to support and nominate other women.

Represent will be published by Workman Press in 2019. In the meantime, if you feel like you need some motivation to become more politically involved, we direct you over to “The 5 Greatest Challenges Facing Women in the Trump Years.”
