Well, this was unexpected. While Marvel Studios likes to drop trailers during sporting events or Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the comic book movie machine surprised their fans by waking them up Monday morning with a baller new trailer for Black Panther. The Ryan Coogler-directed film has probably the best cast Marvel has had so far, and those cast members are showcased quite well in these two-and-a-half minutes (seen above).
We get better looks at the Afro-futuristic look of the secret and isolationist nation of Wakanda, with some hints of Blade Runner in there. When we last saw Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa in Captain America: Civil War, the Black Panther himself learned a lesson on avoiding vengeance, and his evolution will continue in his titular film as he learns diplomacy and leadership. Of course, in a Marvel movie, antagonistic forces come in the forms of Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger (who appears to get his own, similar suit) and Andy Serkis’ Ulysses Klaue, now sporting a weaponized arm after losing his real limb to Ultron.
As mentioned, the cast is absolutely star-studded—we haven’t even mentioned Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead), Martin Freeman as our “outsider” character, Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), and the legendary Angela Bassett and Forest Whitaker. You can see all of these cast members, and a couple of more, in a new poster that Chadwick Boseman tweeted out this morning (seen below).
was lucky enough to see some more footage of the film in late September, describing the action as a mix of Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman films and Coogler’s own Creed. We’ll see if it all comes together when the movie releases on Feb. 16, 2018. Revisit the first teaser for the film here.
