Animated and Live-Action Ghostbuster Movies Are in the Works

Director Ivan Reitman continues to assert that the Ghostbusters franchise is far from over—not that he’s revealing any specific details, of course.

In a recent interview with io9, Reitman said the team began working on an animated film shortly after finishing the most recent Ghostbusters. “We jumped into an animated film [after the last movie] and we are developing live-action films,” he said. “I want to bring all these stories together as a universe that makes sense within itself. Part of my job right now is to do that.”

Reitman doesn’t give much away about either the animated film or the live-action films, but he does say he hopes the animated film will hit theaters sometime around 2019 or 2020. “It’s hard to make an animated film,” he adds.

As for the live-action film, we can only guess. It’s possible he’ll bring back the Melissa McCarthy-led dream team, or maybe he was referring to the rumored all-male, dudebro-friendly reboot. The future of Ghostbusters is still a little shaky, especially since the latest movie didn’t go too well in the eyes of many critics. But according to Reitman, it isn’t going anywhere.
