Andy Warhol once said that an artist is somebody that produces things that people don’t need to have, and it seems that Jared Leto is testing this theory with the creation of a Warhol biopic.

Leto has picked up the rights to Victor Bockris’ 1989 book Warhol: The Biography, alongside producer Michael De Luca (The Social Network, Moneyball). Leto will star in the film, simply titled Warhol, as well as co-produce it with De Luca. Screenwriter Terence Winter (The Wolf of Wall Street, Boardwalk Empire) will pen the feature, using the biography as a jumping-off point.

Warhol rose to pop art fame in the 1960s, despite being openly gay at a time when such a concept was relatively unheard of. Although most famously known for his Campbell’s Soup Cans, Warhol dabbled in numerous mediums beyond painting, including designing album artwork for the Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers and managing Lou Reed’s Velvet Underground.

Despite Suicide Squad receiving mixed reviews, Warhol fans can expect a high-budget biopic that does the pop art luminary justice if Leto’s Oscar-winning role of a transgender AIDs patient in 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club is any indication of what’s to come.
