Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle Sequel in the Works

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has been a massive success for Sony, topping the domestic box office more often than not since its December 2017 release. So naturally, the studio is already plotting a return to the jungle.

The Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle sequel is moving forward, as Variety reports, with screenwriters Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner in talks to write the script. Stars Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan are expected to return for the sequel, along with director Jake Kasdan.

Rosenberg and Pinkner were credited for the Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle screenplay, as were the original Jumanji’s writers, Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Rosenberg and Pinkner also wrote Sony’s forthcoming, Spider-Man-adjacent super-villain flick Venom (Oct. 5), starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock and Michelle Williams as Anne Weying, along with Riz Ahmed and Jenny Slate in unknown roles, and directed by Ruben Fleischer of Zombieland fame.

As younger moviegoers very well may not know, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was itself a sequel to the 1995 action-adventure hit Jumanji, which starred Bonnie Hunt, Kirsten Dunst and, of course, the late Robin Williams. Many moviegoers were upset when the new film was first announced, just one year after William’s death in 2014. But it appears audiences have embraced the follow-up with open arms.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has made over $858 million worldwide (against a $90 million production budget) since its Dec. 20 release, per Box Office Mojo, topping the Stateside box office in its third, fourth, fifth and seventh weekends. The film’s star, Hollywood’s new go-to guy for big-budget action flicks, Dwayne Johnson, shared a fun fact upon learning of the movie’s latest box office-winning weekend:
