Trailer for Netflix Film Lost Girls Explores One Mother’s Desperation to Find Her Daughter

Amy Ryan plays a mother who will stop at nothing to have law enforcement take her daughter’s missing persons case seriously in a forthcoming true-crime movie for Netflix, Lost Girls. It’s actually based on the very real, still-unsolved case of the Long Island serial killer, who is estimated to have killed as many as 20 women over the course of 20 years. Many of the killer’s victims were sex workers, and their bodies were scattered along Ocean Parkway.

The story of Ryan’s character, Mari Gilbert, and her quest to find out what happened to her missing daughter Shannan was previously explored in a New York Magazine piece that eventually led to the book Lost Girls: An Unsolved American History.

Gilbert became a staunch activist for murder victims after her daughter’s disappearance in 2010, often supporting the families of the Long Island serial killer’s victims. Gilbert died in 2016 after being stabbed by her other daughter, Sara Gilbert.

Lost Girls will be directed by Liz Garbus (The Fourth Estate; What Happened, Miss Simone?), and co-stars Thomasin McKenzie, Gabriel Byrne and Lola Kirke.
