A Sequel to Korean Zombie Film Train to Busan Is Coming

Horror fans know that 2016’s Train to Busan is one of the best zombie films in recent memory, a fact that earned the Korean zombie drama a prominent position on our list of the 50 best zombie films of all time. The story of a diverse, interesting group of characters who are all stuck on a careening train during the middle of a zombie outbreak in Seoul, it was often referred to as being “Snowpiercer with zombies,” but the comparison was valid—both Korean films crackle with creative energy, and their action scenes do largely take place on trains.

Now, director Yeon San-ho is working on a sequel to his original film. Tellingly, the Korean working title seems to be Bando, which means “penninsula,” suggesting that you can’t exactly make a sequel that simply involves another train. Still, an entire peninsula—that should give a bit more freedom of movement, right? Yeon San-ho is currently int he process of writing the film, with shooting hopefully beginning in 2019.

“It is an extension of Train To Busan, after the virus has spread throughout Korea, but the characters are not the same,” said the director. “It shares the same world view and is a zombie action film that deals with the aftermath on the peninsula of what happened in Train To Busan.”

The first film was massively successful in its home country, becoming the top grosser in South Korea for 2016, with roughly $83 million at its domestic box office. In the U.S., the original Train to Busan can currently be seen on Netflix, and there may still be an English-language remake on the way. In the meantime, check out a trailer for the original film below.
