Beck made a surprise appearance at Father John Misty’s benefit concert last night (Dec. 18), leading an all-star band through the alt-rock mainstay’s 1996 single “Where It’s At.”
Misty’s show, benefitting recovery from the recent devastating wildfires in California, featured a stacked lineup of musicians including Haim, Rivers Cuomo (Weezer), Mac DeMarco, Rostam, Weyes Blood, Jonathan Wilson, Nate Ruess (Fun.), producer Jeff Bhasker and comedian Tim Heidecker (of Tim & Eric), to name a few. Not included in the official lineup was Beck, though the rocker certainly gave a performance to remember.
Forming a one-off supergroup of sorts, Beck brought out Misty on drums, Este Haim on bass, Wilson on guitar and Bhasker on the keyboard. The group performed the 1996 lead single off of Beck’s Odelay and, though only caught through a few fan-shot, grainy Instagram videos, the performance was clearly pretty great.
Beck has apparently been a fan of the supergroup since the release of his last album, 2017’s Colors (check out Paste’s review of that here). Back in October, he was backed by fellow ‘90s legend Dave Grohl and L.A. duo The Bird and The Bee for a Swing Left fundraiser leading up to the midterm elections. Fingers crossed this is a continuing trend—we’re pretty sure Beck could be backed by anyone and still blow us away.
