Dehd Share New Song, "Dying For"

Chicago indie-rock outfit Dehd have shared their song “Dying For,” out now through Fire Talk Records. The track is the band’s first new release since 2017’s Fire of Love EP.

Dehd are like many Chicago bands in that they share members with other acts from across the city. Jason Balla splits his time between Dehd, NE-HI and Earring, while co-vocalist Emily Kempf was previously in indie upstarts Lala Lala. This interconnectivity makes Chicago music feel like its own insular beast, a place where the pull of other sounds is constantly felt. It’s not that the bands sound the same—it’s more that they occupy a shared universe.

“Dying For,” then, is the sound of a road-trip through that universe. Balla and Kempf sing over winding guitar lines and each other in what sounds like an approximation of a road song, the sound filtered and distant, the road they’re so desperately pining for feeling more like a photograph than the real thing. “Is a dream worth dying for if you’re six feet underground?” they ask, before ripping up the question in favor of a more pressing one. “What are you lying for? Aren’t you tired out?”
