You might know her as Dee Dee, but the Dum Dum Girls’ Kristin Welchez (née Gundred) is starting up a new project that’s about as far from her former musical identity as possible: she announced today that she’ll be making heavily electronic synth-pop music under the moniker Kristin Kontrol. The transformation is pretty complete; search “Dum Dum Girls” on Twitter, and it takes you right to Kristin Kontrol’s feed.
“I wanted to open things up and shed light on significant influences that felt off-limits in Dum Dum land,” the singer/songwriter said in a press release. “I don’t want to fight them off anymore. That’d be a drag.”
The debut Kristin Kontrol LP will be released this spring on Sub Pop. Meanwhile, Welchez also made a short teaser video on the new Kristin Kontrol YouTube channel, and it looks and feels like a fashion show. Check it out below. And here, you can read our 2014 cover story on the Dum Dum Girls.
