We all know those items that will never just be inanimate objects to us because of the memories attached to them. The sweatshirt from your ex-best friend, your grandmother’s favorite mug, the faded sign on the corner where the old bookshop used to be—they’re all inhabited by ghosts that simply won’t let us forget the past.
Frankie Cosmos’ new digital-only collection Haunted Items breaks out the sonic Ouija board and delves into this subject, with just frontwoman Greta Kline’s voice and a piano to lead the way. The stripped-back songs are being released on a weekly basis, with “Tunnel” and “Dancing” serving as the first singles. On these first two tracks, Kline and her group once again wield vulnerability like a weapon. The line “You’ve bought more pairs of jeans / than you ever shed tears” from “Dancing” has a simplicity and emotional sting that feels almost Joni Mitchell-esque.
Kline explains in a statement that “items themselves are harmless unless they are infused with some kind of energy.” She continues:
These items are haunted by fear, consumerism, commitment, love, loss, the list goes on … I had some of these songs stuck inside me, mostly because I wrote a lot of them for piano and didn’t know how to record them, even as demos. My friend Elia gifted me with 10 hours of recording time with Mark Yoshizumi, and this winter felt like the perfect opportunity to get these out of my system and haunt you with them instead. I have always been afraid of items being haunted, but when you think about it, every item is, right?
