Over the years, Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis has gained some serious cred as a soloist. It’s been more than three decades since the ’90s rock heroes broke out with their debut record, Dinosaur, and J Mascis is still blowing us away with his dynamite guitar solos.
In 2011, he was taking a softer approach, much like on his third solo album from last year, Elastic Days. On June 6, 2011, J Mascis recorded a Daytrotter session, swapping his electric energy for more subdued acoustics. He performed a handful of tunes from his album out that year, Several Shades of Why, including the title track and “Listen to Me,” plus a very nice cover of Edie Brickell & New Bohemians’ “Circle,” from their classic 1988 album Shooting Rubberbands At The Stars.
