Live Photos: Jose Gonzalez Performs Against the Manhattan Skyline at the Appel Room

Jose Gonzalez has built a musical persona contrasting the epic with the intimate. Whether through his candid acoustic covers of post-rock and electronica (“Heartbeats,” “Love Will Tear Us Apart”) or the seething indie of his work in Junip, the Swedish musician knows how to shrink and expand a song for emotional punch. That relationship played out visually when he took the stage at The Appel Room in Manhattan, a venue with a massive glass backdrop capturing Central Park and the surrounding skyline. Gonzalez had just wrapped touring with The String Theory orchestra for a series of one-man performances working his way back to Europe, and last Friday’s show accentuated every nimble arpeggio and confessional lyric against a backdrop of the second biggest city in the world. Gonzalez played two sets of songs off his three records, sharing stories and inspirations (“Far Away” was written for a videogame and “Stories We Build, Stories We Tell” was inspired by West African music). Photographer Julia Drummond captured the evocative show in the gallery above. Jose Gonzalez is playing select dates in Europe through July.
