For the past two weeks, Amy Harris has remained on the front lines of this year’s New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, one of the few marquee summer music events unafraid to stray outside the alt-rock/EDM/hip-hop trenches that tend to make the fests borderline indistinguishable. Jazzfest revels in its city’s deep historical reservoirs of blues, dixie, Latin, R&B, funk and every shade between. Yes, there are still capital triple-A bands that punctuate most nights, but the real flavor emerges in the earlier sets and parades.
