Even if you didn’t know it was coming, you knew it was coming: the Jurassic Park ride at Universal Studios Hollywood will soon be reopening as Jurassic World: The Ride. If you missed the announcement last year, you’d probably be able to guess that the Jurassic Park ride from the ‘90 was going to be updated and upgraded and rebranded as a Jurassic World ride. Because those Jurassic World movies are massive—or at least the first one was.
We still don’t have an opening date for Jurassic World: The Ride, although we know it’ll be some time this summer. We do get an idea of what to expect from a new trailer that Universal released today, and that you can watch below. At the end of the ad you’ll see about two seconds of what appears to be on-ride footage. It’s probably a mock-up, but you can clearly see passengers on a boat coasting by an aquarium window with some kind of crocodile dinosaur inside. Like the Jurassic Park ride, Jurassic World will be a water chute, one of those Splash Mountain-style rides where you ride on a boat that eventually falls down a huge hill. And since it’s Jurassic World, obviously the dinosaurs we’re checking out will flip out and bust up some stuff, putting anybody in that boat at risk. What we can’t tell is if the dinosaurs in Jurassic World will be animatronic, like the ones that were in Jurassic Park: The Ride, or if the upgrades will include replacing physical props with screen technology. Screens might allow for dinosaurs with a more dynamic range of motion—and are also easier to maintain than animatronics—but it’s easier to suspend disbelief when you’re confronted with an animatronic dinosaur instead of an image. The dinosaurs found at the Jurassic Park: The Ride at Universal’s Islands of Adventure in Orlando help make it one of the best rides at that park, and hopefully Jurassic World: The Ride won’t entirely replace them with screens.
Here’s the new trailer. Again, there’s very little ride footage in here, and what there is probably wasn’t taken on the actual ride itself. Still, it’s a fun little ad, especially for fans of the movies, and it definitely makes me want to try out the new ride.
