Here’s a forthcoming Netflix show that may have flown under your radar: Altered Carbon, based on the Richard K. Morgan novel of the same name, is a grisly-looking cyberpunk dystopia series starring Joel Kinnaman. Netflix came out with a very brief, but still quite visceral teaser (above).

The video interweaves a pleasant advertisement for a service allowing humans to transfer their consciousness to new bodies—this is juxtaposed with intense and horrifying images of the actual process. The rest of the teaser has quick and action-packed snippets from the show, which takes place in the far future and focuses on “Envoy soldier” Takeshi Kovacs, a half-Japanese, half-Eastern European character played by the Swedish-American Kinnaman, who is tasked with investigating the attempted murder of the wealthiest man on earth, Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy). With the show’s premise of taking on new bodies, Kovacs appears to be an Asian character who awakens in a white man’s body. We’ll have to see how this apparent case of “canon whitewashing” compares to Ghost in the Shell.

Altered Carbon will begin streaming on Feb. 2, 2018.
