New on Netflix: All the Movies and TV Coming in July

A healthy chunk of the internet is all in a tizzy over The Office’s upcoming exodus from Netflix (in 2021, mind you), despite the fact that the show concluded its run in 2013 and is readily available on DVD. But it’s nonetheless business as usual for the streaming giant, which has the usual cavalcade of film and television titles inbound next month, and it is our solemn duty to tell you which ones you should add to your queue, then never get around to actually watching because you just keep rewatching The Office.

If there’s one particularly shiny new addition arriving in July, it’s Stranger Things 3, the latest season of Netflix’s Spielbergian sci-fi adventure series, debuting on the July 4 holiday. The Duffer Brothers’ hit series is ramping up the ‘80s nostalgia and turning up the heat just in time for summer: “School’s out, there’s a brand new mall in town, and the Hawkins crew are on the cusp of adulthood. Romance blossoms and complicates the group’s dynamic, and they’ll have to figure out how to grow up without growing apart,” the show’s synopsis explains. “Meanwhile, danger looms. When the town’s threatened by enemies old and new, Eleven and her friends are reminded that evil never ends; it evolves. Now they’ll have to band together to survive, and remember that friendship is always stronger than fear.” Other highlights in TV include: Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee (July 19), Jerry Seinfeld’s self-explanatory talk show, the 11 latest episodes of which will feature the comedy legend in a car and getting coffee with Eddie Murphy, Seth Rogen, Ricky Gervais, Matthew Broderick, Jamie Foxx, Sebastian Maniscalco, Martin Short, Mario Joyner, Melissa Villaseñor, Bridget Everett and Barry Marder; beloved reality series reboot Queer Eye (July 19), returning for a fourth season in which the Fab Five take their talents to Kansas City, Missouri; the seventh and final season of Netflix’s long-running, Jenji Kohan-created women’s prison dramedy Orange Is the New Black (July 26), which has run since 2013 and won four Emmys along the way; and Whitney Cummings comedy special Can I Touch It? (July 30), the multi-hyphenate comedian’s fourth stand-up special, and her first for Netflix.

Over in the film department, Netflix has plenty more for us to look forward to, including a film being increasingly bandied about as the foremost work of an American master: Quentin Tarantino’s 2009 alternate-history World War II drama Inglourious Basterds (July 22), starring Brad Pitt as Lt. Aldo Raine, the leader of the film’s eponymous band of Jewish U.S. soldiers set loose in Germany to terrorize Nazis. The Basterds’ plans to take down Hitler and his ilk intersect with those of Shosanna Dreyfus (Melanie Laurent), a Jewish cinema owner hiding out in Paris, whose family was slaughtered on the orders of notorious SS Col. Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz, in an Oscar-winning breakout performance). Before we can tag along with the Basterds, though, we’ll gain access to a host of films on July 1, including a pair of stone-cold Martin Scorsese classics in Taxi Driver and Mean Streets, Oscar-winning Jonathan Demme drama Philadelphia, golf club comedy Caddyshack, Tom Cruise/Dustin Hoffman drama Rain Man, Patrick Swayze-starring beat-’em-up Road House, Tim Burton’s 2005 take on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, stoner-comedy classic Cheech & Chong’s Up in Smoke, unlikely sci-fi smash-hit Cloverfield, infamous M. Night Shyamalan misfire Lady in the Water, franchise-launching 2009 comedy The Hangover and Denzel Washington-led post-apocalyptic thriller The Book of Eli, among others. Coming later in July are Meryl Streep-starring Oscar winner The Iron Lady (July 6), the Emily Blunt-led Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns (July 9), Vince Vaughn/Jennifer Aniston rom-com The Break-Up (July 16) and Oscar-nominated animated adventure The Croods (July 29).

Don’t forget about the titles Netflix is losing in July, either. Quite a few of Netflix’s best movies vacate the service on July 1, including The Terminator, Silence of the Lambs, Cool Hand Luke, Pan’s Labyrinth, Punch-Drunk Love, The Mummy (the good one with Brendan Fraser!) Dumb and Dumber, the Matrix trilogy, The Wild Bunch, Bull Durham, Doctor Zhivago and many more. And that’s not all: Movies following those ones out the door later in the month include Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (July 2), The Indian in the Cupboard (July 4), Lion (July 9), Gone Baby Gone (July 12), The Immigrant (July 14), American Gangster (July 16) and all seven seasons of Pretty Little Liars (July 27), so if you need any of those titles in your life, you’d better hustle up.
